Germans usually do not cross a street when the pedestrian traffic light is red. Even if there is no car in sight.
But crossing at a red traffic light is okay if you step away 10 meters from it and then quickly cross. Because then the traffic light is not valid to you anymore.

when I have a red light that makes absolutely no sense to me when cycling, instead of just running over the red light, I change to the sidewalk and the red light isn't valid for me any more. (of course only if there are no pedestrians I could disturb)
because running a red light = up to 120€
cycling on the sidewalk = 20€
