@Aarkon Ah gut zu wissen. Die Videos haben auch nicht viele Views. Ich will eigentlich lieber Videos hosten, die auch wirklich angeschaut werden.

@Aarkon Ja das stimmt. Aber es ist halt ein Unterschied, wenn jemand ein paar hundert MB hochläd, oder wenn du hundert GB hochladen willst. Wie gesagt, mit einzelnen Videos hab ich kein Problem.

Ich habe den Server erst seit ein paar Wochen, deshalb ist das für mich auch alles neu. Ich versuche halt, es nach Gefühl zu moderieren.

Und keine Ahnung wegen dem encoding, dafür kennen ich mich zu wenig mit ffmpeg und dem Peertube Code aus.

@nutomic Ich gucke gerade aus Jux mal bei der GPN18. Welches Format verursacht denn weniger Arbeit?
Von den SD-Formaten sehe ich mal ab. Zur Verfügung stehen mp4 mit avc/h264 + AAC und webm mit VP8 + Vorbis.

@Aarkon Peertube konvertiert die Videos mit `ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -y -vcodec libx264 -movflags faststart output.mp4`, also es wahrscheinlich am besten, wenn du es vor dem Upload so konvertierst.

@nutomic Wenn da nicht unter Umständen auf "vcodec copy" umgeschaltet wird, ists wohl relativ egal, mit welchem Encoding ein Video hochgeladen wird, solange die Qualität maximal ist, oder? 🤔

Because as long as the instance does not skip transcoding if it detects that input and output formats are the same, we recompress again.

a) diversifying hosting
- lowering costs
- increasing resilience

b) using PeerTube
- putting the system to a test by creating some actual load
- making the ecosystem more attractive with well received content

Opposite question: What's the advantage of not having those videos on PeerTube?
Or the disadvantage of having them? 🤔

@rixx Costs as in "high availability video hosting is costly", be it in traffic fees, bandwidth allocation, or overall system load.

To be clear, wouldn't want to replace media.ccc.de. I just don't see the harm in opening another channel, especially if it is one featuring some fresh & cool technology, and I'm curious what one can do with PeerTube. 😊

@Aarkon @rixx imO thats the same discussion as why they stopped providing torrent files for media.ccc.de.

cdn.media.ccc.de is already decentralized, mirrors are provided by different erfas and other institutions. i wouldnt consider bandwidth, traffic fees, system load, ... a problem.

maybe #voc-lounge @ hackint.org is a better place to discuss this?

dont get me wrong, nothing against adding peertube instances to the cdn.

@MacLemon @c3wien Kommt drauf an, wie weit man das Spiel treibt. Alle Konferenzen mit allen Jahrgängen würde ich auch nicht von Hand machen wollen sondern mal an einem Wochenende was scripten.
Die jeweils letzten Iterationen von GPN und Congress würde ich pessimistisch mit zusammen 300 - 400 GByte abschätzen.

@MacLemon @c3wien *alle Jahrgänge aller Konferenzen: wenn man das ÜBERHAUPT mal in Gänze durchZÖGE, dann WÜRDE ich mal an einem Wochenende was scripten.
Ich hoffe, der Konjunktiv macht klar, dass ich das nicht wirklich vorhabe, zumindest nicht in der näheren Zukunft. 😉
